Hi! I’m Alana, a Chicago-based Art Director, graphic designer, photographer, filmmaker, YouTuber, blogger, maker of stuff, drinker of coffee. I live with the best husband ever, my lovely daughters, dapper gent son, & 2 freeloading pets.
I studied photography in NYC in the late 80’s while DJing with Dave Kendall (Host of 120 Minutes, for you youngsters) at The Mission in the Lower East Side. At the time it was literally the only place in Manhattan playing the early-day alternative, so lots of now legendary bands would stop in. It was such an amazing time to be there. We had a great time!
One random evening, this very nice dreadlock-headed guy and I were chatting. His band was beginning to tour and he said I could come and photograph them anytime I want. As it happened, I did a lot of traveling that summer and ended up filming and photographing his band in several cities along the Pretty Hate Machine tour. Those photos, credentials, and experience led to other ventures in the music and graphic design industry, yadda-yadda, I now live in Chicago. You just never know what will lead to what.
I teach Digital Image Design at Columbia College part time in addition to my role at a local ad agency. If I could go back and talk to my teenage self, I’d say, “Don’t worry. You can absolutely make a good living being a creative professional.” You just have to be the reliable one who works hard.
My mission for the next year is to “Inspire and be Inspired”. Love it! Wallow in it. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece every day. Some days it’s just a sketch or an origami crane you make from a cocktail napkin. Some days it’s just some nice person you talk to who gives you a shot to go take some cool photos.
